The Japanese Maple has long been thought of as the prize of any garden. With the amazing varieties of these splendid trees it always amazes me that people tend to stick to the two basic ones, the ‘Bloodgood’ or the ‘Lace Leaf’. BORING!!! There are about 160 different species recognized by botanists and another at least 900 that are out there grafted by mad scientists.
Some have cream colored leaves such as the beautiful ‘Ukigumo’. It’s amazing, look it up!
The ‘Sango Kaku’ is another interesting one with the bark looking like coral.
What about the ‘Shirassawanum’? Bright yellow leaves that turn orange red in the fall.
My point is that it’s a big fun and interesting plant world out there! Let’s go find some and make your garden the most interesting and delightful it can be!
